The region is one of the main areas that specializes in timber harvesting, woodworking and timber exporting in the northwestern Russia. Total area of forest in use is 3109,4 thousand hectares.

    Ressources en eau The region has substantial water resource potential. The major rivers are the Neva, the Volkhov, the Svir, the Luga, the Vuoksa, the Syas. There are many lakes in the region (more than 1800), especially at the Karelian Isthmus. The Gulf of Finland stretches from west to east for 420 miles, its area is 29.5 thousand sq km. Salinity is low - 3.6% (dut to the large intake of water from the Neva river). Lakes Ladoga and Onega are the largest reservoirs of fresh water. Lake Ladoga is the biggest in Europe. Navigation is conducted through the Volga-Baltic Waterway, the White Sea-Baltic Sea and Saimaa Canals, Ladoga and Onega lakes, the rivers Neva, Svir et al.
