WEF Annual Meeting: Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World

Research
8 February 2018

More than 3,000 leaders from over 100 countries came together on the 48th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum which took place from 23 to 26 January 2018 in Davos. The 2018 meeting faced an unprecedented participation of government leaders including nearly 70 heads of states or governments and more than 30 heads of major international organisations.

A great interest was taken in the WEF meeting in 2018, which is confirmed by the following statistics. Thus, there were 6 million individual unique visitors to the World Economic Forum’s website during the week. 225,000 stories about the World Economic Forum appeared in the global press during

January 2018, over 25% more than in 2017. The report also contains other statistics demonstrating high interest in the meeting and its relevance. At meeting there were discussed the most significant issues that require attention of the international community: problems related to the environment, international economy and security. Among other things, the following events can be noted as touched upon at the meeting. The Forum’s series of Diplomacy Dialogues has committed to supplementing ongoing multilateral efforts in the Korean Peninsula, Venezuela, sub-Saharan Africa and Somalia. Israeli and Palestinian business leaders met to discuss the reduction in the existing pressure in the region.

The Forum also formed a new community of businesspeople who have committed to advise and support the Prime Minister of Iraq in the reconstruction of the country. Prime Minister of Greece and Prime Minister of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, held the first meeting for seven years (until now the issue of the second name has not been resolved, as Greece insists that Macedonia is an area of Greece, and the state cannot have the relevant name).

This Report details the above mentioned issues as well as other issues discussed at the Forum Meeting 2018.
